Review – Royal Automobile Club

On Wednesday 17 July, forty (40) impeccably dressed Probus members were hosted by the Royal Automobile Club at 89 Macquarie St Sydney. The Club is located in a grand, eight storey, state heritage-listed building adjacent to Circular Quay. The building itself is an important and relatively rare surviving example of a purpose built gentleman’s club from the early 20th century, open to woman only after World War II.

The Club, founded in 1903, has played a major role in promoting motoring in Australia. Two significant examples being the introduction of driver examinations and the establishment of country petrol stations.

The day was organised by Rosalie Karim, who had been on a heritage tour there some years ago. Yue Pan, Membership & Marketing Manager for the Club, with the assistance of three senior members of the Club – David, Ian and Peter – arranged for morning tea or coffee at the Members Bar, a one hour plus tour of the building with the opportunity for us to ask lots of questions, and finally a delicious lunch in the top floor Harbour Dining Room. We were also welcomed by the new CEO, John Autelitano.

It is a beautiful building, and we all felt very lucky to have the opportunity to visit.
