Travel Chat – Wednesday 9 April 2025

At our next Travel Chat meeting we will be hearing about Malta.

Malta is strategically positioned in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a small island packed with much history due to the succession of rulers including the Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French and Britain.

Princess Elizabeth (before she became Queen) lived a normal life during the two years that Prince Philip was based in Malta, serving as a Royal Naval Officer. The Queen fondly recalls “Before I acceded to the throne, Philip and I lived in Malta as a young married couple. Villa Guardamangia was our home, outside Valletta. Some of the happiest years of my life.”

This villa has been restored and can be visited.

We will hear about the attractions of Malta from two perspectives:

  1. From Ron, giving an insider’s view as he lived there for 2 years. Ron is going to talk about the history of Malta so we can make sense of its amazing architecture. He will also show slides of the rich history of buildings and monuments seen when one strolls down the 1.5 km of Republic Street of Valetta, starting at the Triton Fountain and ending at St Elmo Fort. He will share photos of his family album.

  2. From Marg and Gil, giving a tourist’s view of Malta, having visited for a family reunion. They saw well known attractions such as the Gardens of Upper Barrakka, the walled city of Mdina and adjoining Rabat, taking a boat ride through the Blue Grotto and swimming in the clear waters of the Blue Lagoon and much more.

Come along on Wednesday 9 April from 11 am to the Breakfast Point Administration Building at 2-4 Magnolia Drive Breakfast Point and discover why Malta is such a special place according to Queen Elizabeth, Ron, Marg and Gill.

There is a door code to access the building. If you don’t know the door code, drop a message to the convener, Connie Fraser. Otherwise, you can knock on the door at the back of the building, near the IGA car park.
