Travel Chat – Wednesday 8 March 2023

At our next meeting in March, we will be travelling to the two furthermost countries from Australia – Norway and Iceland.

In Norway, we will tour historic Bergen and ride on the Flam railways, considered the “most scenic rail trip in Europe”, then cruise on a fjord. Can you guess who Norway’s most famous musician is?

We will visit his family home – museum. We will learn about the rich cultural life in the capital city Oslo, with its Civic Hall which hosts the annual Nobel Peace Prize; the striking Opera House and museums. We will also visit towns along Norway’s long coastline such as Alesund, Tromso, Alta and ending at Nordkapp.

In Iceland, after a quick tour of Reykjavik, we travel to the geological significant area of the Golden Circle with its rift valley, geysers and waterfalls. Hear about how Iceland has become a geothermal powerhouse in meeting its heating and electricity needs as well as providing the warm waters for the famous “Blue Lagoon”.

We will also visit the towns of Akureyri and Vik and see the spectacular
countryside including glaciers, volcanoes and black sand beaches. Iceland is rightly described as the “place of fire and ice”.

Come along next Wednesday 8 March from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm in the Breakfast Point Admin building.
